We have been long term turtle keepers, but really started to focus on keeping Russian Tortoises in 2010. We started getting eggs within the first couple of years but didn't hatch our first clutch until 2013. Since then we regularly produce new hatchlings every year. Nearly all of our original animals were rescues or adoptions from people who could no longer care for their turtle.
We breed these tortoises in part because there are still far too many of these animals that are collected from the wild. By producing captive bred animals we hope to do our own small part in making these tortoises available locally without impacting the declining wild populations. As one of the smallest tortoise species they make great pets without getting overly large like other species. Their adaptations to an arid grassland environment allow them to thrive in our dry homes (with proper lighting and a humid hiding area) and as herbivores their diet of leafy greens is available at most well stocked grocery stores (and summer weedy lawns).
